Heeeello family! Just a little note to say I've been to the Y four times this past week. I'm back to running/walking/jogging every other day soo hooray for that! I've stepped it up to an hour long thing. No weights or any thing fancy yet but I've found some neat Pinterest posts for popular workout sites featuring superfit people. Hmmm...wonder if I'll be one someday! (I guess that's up to me!)
Anyway, holla!
Chelsea...I do plan on making those blk bean brownies too! You sent the recipe through email right?

No Posts in June.. and we are almost in July!
Hi family,
So I think its safe to say, we've pretty much fallen off this blog waggon. But maybe we should ressurect it! Its Summer and its time to play in the sunshine and keep losin' it! What better way to exercise than in the summer mornings or at dusk when it cools off. Lately i've been running at 6 am before work. Its suprisingly easier than I thought. As long as I trick myself and get my shoes on and out the door before I really realize what im doing. The morning jogs are a breath of fresh air, literally. I love seeing the dog walkers, and ducks by our nearby pond. I also feel so much better all day after I have my morning run. Who would have EVER though that I would opt to get up at 6am... not this girl.
On a celebratory note, I bought my dream suit and it came in the mail a few days ago! I am so excited to wear it to Put In Bay for the 4th of July weekend. I've been working so hard, and the suit fits perfectly! yay!
How are all of you doing on your goals? I see Dad is almost up to 20 lbs on lose it. Go pick up a medicine ball that is 20 lbs.. and youll see just how much weight that really is. Its amazing to think that can come off just through eating right and exercising. where does it go!? Keep working hard and putting in the sweat (and maybe tears). love you all and see you this weekend for the fathers day/birthday celebration!

Loop-di-duper :)
Hi Fam! Just checking in. We best be exercising our little fingers..this blog is looking flabby!
About a week ago I discovered the joys of running a loop...down 682 across the bridge & down the bike path. (It's so nice not to double back on the bike path!) I think I've down that two or three times this past week & never ever do I run in the mornings but today, the weather was cool & not rainy, so...reminiscent of my college days, I threw on some clothes, tied my laces & hit the pavement. I did discover that my evening music mix will NOT do for morning running sprees. They're sorta relaxing & in the morning I need all the artificial pep I can get. I need tunes like "Highway to the Danger Zone" or "Get this Party Started" or something...Jules, what did you say was your favorite running song?
And so that was my workout today. :) How was yours?

Back in the saddle again
Don't know if you caught my exercise this week. First I was in the saddle (riding lawnmower for 1 hour) on Thursday which I estimated at 100 calories although there is no readout on the John Deere. Then just 10 minutes ago I was in the saddle again (exercise bike this time) for 23 minutes burning 154 calories. This was duly recorded on loseit and now I have another 154 calories to spend if I so desire. So far on loseit I'm down 15 lbs. Now I'm rivalling you Chelly.

Keep on, Keepin' on
Hello Water Logged Bloggers!
Not much rain here to report. Just a bit overcast with some drizzles. Matt & I went to Wyoming last weekend for Easter where it was cool and sunny.
Friday I took advantage of my gym's group fitness classes for the first time. I hit up a 10 am yoga class that had about 50+ people. I had lifted for my upper body the day before, so wasn't so psyched when the zen-style yoga teacher announced we would be focusing on the upper body and doing about "80 chaturangas" (push-ups). Yikes! We ended up doing about 100, but at about #40, I took her up on the suggestion to add a "modification" (read: knees down). It was a good work out. Here's a cool song on the teacher's yoga mix, which I think Kayte would especially like:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=201esMf3RA8
Matt & I ran on Saturday in Wyoming around the country through "Mormon Canyon." We saw some deer and antelope. Very scenic out there in Glenrock!

http://www.cartoonstock.com/directory/a/antelope.asp
Today I am back in Pueblo. I usually skip the Monday night exercise since I am a little zonked after my Monday morning 4:30 alarm. However, after hearing a story on NPR on my drive down about how sitting on our butts is bad for our health, I was inspired to hit the treadmill at La Quinta tonight. Here is the link:
http://m.npr.org/story/135575490?url=/2011/04/25/135575490/sitting-all-day-worse-for-you-than-you-might-think&sc=fb&cc=fp
Not that this is any surprise, but I give a lot of exercise advice to my patients dealing with chronic pain. So I decided to heed my own advice and ease my aching back by exercising. I think it worked :)
Keep up the spring exercise blog diet momentum.

Drought-be-gone
Well first and formost- HAPPY EARTH DAY! Go ahead.. get out and go eat a veggie burger! If you have a little extra time make one! Its cheap, easy, fun, delcious and something new to try. Here is a bomb recipe http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sandra-lee/black-bean-burgers-recipe/index.html . I like to add cumin and other spices to mine. Or if you're crunched for time, you can buy them - try MorningStar Asian Pattys or Spicy Black Bean burgers. You can grill them for maximum taste, but still on 100 calories, so you can induldge and make yourself a whopping double stack. : )
Good thing Kayte is the one riding everyones tails now to get back on this site. Im sure you were sick of me doing it . Although I totally agree, get back on ye blog. The more it rains, i say, the more we write!
I must say now that I'm back from San Fran, I am soooo happy that I am pretty rigorous with my eating/working out in the week so I can enjoy what I want on my mini vacations. I ate anything I wanted for those 3 days and was guilt free! When you work hard, you have to reward yourself. I was worried I was beginning to live in a health food cage I trapped myself in, but I think I have really learned how to balance pretty well and when to treat myself. If you never treat yourself, cravings get outta control and um.. hello... one of the biggest perks in life is delicious food (yes, I had in-n-out burger TWICE :) ) But heres the crazy thing.. i weighed less when I got back then when I left. Just more proof that you need to confuse your body sometimes so it keeps working hard.
My weightloss has slowed down for sure, but thats probably because ive relaxed my diet a little. I have 7-8 lbs more to go, which should vanish by end of May since I've tightened it back up this week. I mean its almost bikini season for petes sake!
Hope you all are doing splendidly. I don't know about you, but I think these downpours have been nice. As much as I like sunny perfect weather, I think the rain is relaxing, especially when I hear it pitter patter on the roof at work. Keep working hard, it will pay off and you'll feel better :)
PS: the best meal replacement protein bars ive found are Cliff Builder Bars. 20g of protein, 270 cal. Perfect for breakfast or an on-the-go lunch. Oh yea and dont pay more than $1/bar ...hunt around for a deal.

Lots of rain, but we've got a BLOGGIN' DROUGHT!
Hi Sisters and Dad, How's the movin' and shakin' in your worlds lately? Good I hope! Exercise is good for us!
It's been flooding all over SE Ohio and the river is higher than I've seen it maybe ever. We've had bursts of sunshine this week but also torrential rain (which has been rough on the "new" front lawn in Cinci!) and so it hasn't been the best week to play outside. Howeva' spring is here & everything is greener and the bikepath is a great place to be.... Polly & I walked earlier tonight while my car's oil was being changed.
I keep listening to the Fit2Fat radio podcast while I walk/run the bike path and learn about the most common prob's people encounter with weight lost: 1) eating below their basal metabolic rate 2) losing lean muscle while their bodies are eating below their basal metabolic rate. Yep, these two things cause good intentions to result in bad results. So in some cases, for weight loss plateaus, the recommended advise is "Eat up pup!" A neat resource for calculating your BMR is here: http://www.fat2fitradio.com/tools/bmr/
Hit the Community Center tonight for a half hour run & some pull-ups (with the help of the pull-up machine) and also some stomach/back strengthening weight machines. I had been doing some crunches on my exercise ball in the am & pm this week & found that my posture was beginning to go south. Duh! I've got to work out my muscles in pairs. So I'll be laying my tum on the ball and doing reverse crunches now too.
It's Cadberry egg season so hop to the gym & then eat one with a glass of milk or protein shake. :)

Bright, sunshiny day!
The clouds burst in the am in Athens today, but the pm was sunshine & blue skies. :)
Today, yesterday and Wednesday (three days in a row, I think!) Polly Pup & I were on the bike path. So many other folks were enjoying the path too. It's the place to be if you're an Athens exerciser. People walk dogs, ride bikes, walk with strollers, walk holding hands and sometimes skate board or rollerblade. The podcast in my ears today and on Wednesday was "Podcasts for Running: Couch to 5K." It's a very chill mix of techno-dance club beats with podcaster Robert letting you know when to walk/run for 90 seconds, 3 minutes, or 5 minutes. The "Couch to 5K" program was something Robert started on his 43 birthday.
If I had my way, I'd just run slowly for 45 min, however, Polly Pup can't take it. So, a walk/run mix is what I've gotta do when I go with her. (I'd feel so bad not going w/ her! Poor thing needs cardio too!) Also, she doesn't like running while on a leash so I unleash her & we run in the grass by the river along the bikepath so we avoid the bikes...
I need a human runner companion! Anne sometimes runs with me but I may just need to look into finding a running club. There is an OU one, but...there's gotta be youngsters/oldsters my age! This is the challenge of Athens.
Speaking of beautiful Athens...our Cherry trees are in bloom & so pretty! Look:

Keeping that brain busy - the non-music way :)
Hi! I'm about to go hiking in the wilderness but I really don't like being bored so I'm downloading podcasts to listen to as I move it.*
How to find podcasts?
1. Download iTunes & visit the iTunes store.
2. Type in a keyword in the upper right-hand search. For example: Fitness Filter the results to include only podcasts (Click "podcasts" in the left menu box.)
3. At this point, you can "subscribe" to a podcast OR, and this is what I recommend: Click the title or icon of the podcast and you can listen before clicking the "free" download button.
*Podcasts are a well-kept secret. A podcast is a pre-recorded audio show. People from all over the place create free podcasts & some of them are real gems. A good podcast is a friend indeed. Per fitness/weight-loss/healthy goals I've selected the "Fat 2 Fit"podcast. Have a listen & keep that brain in shape. :)

Runnin' and Roadtrippin'
Hello bloggers! Excellent work with the cardio action! You guys are fun bloggers.
Matt and I went on a roadtrip last week since our trip to Bahrain didn't seem like the safest idea in the world. We took off for Utah and went to Zion in case you didn't get your postcards yet I! We did some trail running in the park and some awesome hikes. I highly recommend Angel's landing:
http://www.goldengatephoto.com/jpeg/01-33-4.jpg
After Zion, we headed west toward CA with a 2 hr stop in Las Vegas. Matt left the craps table up $35 (but later down $50 on a bet on the Notre Dame basketball team). He really doesn't have a gambling problem :) (Although he is in Vegas again this weekend with his college buddies...)
The exercise continued in SoCal. We stayed with Matt's cousin in Garden Grove and even made a nostalgic trip to Disneyland! Dad, you'll appreciate that we went on a run around Mile Square park by your old office in Fountain Valley.
After a few more days running around the OC, we drove Scarlet down to San Diego to stay for a few days with Matt's friends. We went on another nice run at Balboa Park:
http://cdn.hotelplanner.com/Common/Images/Landmarks/3905.jpg
And then another great run on the beach at Torrey Pines State park:

All in all, we had 5 great vacation runs. Then I caught a nasty cold and have taken some days off. I did make it on to the treadmill for 30 mins last night during idol. Hopefully this weekend I will run around my fave parks in Denver and hit the gym for some upper body weight lifting.
Hugs, Exercisers!

April Showers Bring May.. weightloss!
Oh, it just warms my heart that you all decided to remember that we have a blog! Yay for my pestering ways. Kayte- your post made me laugh out loud for real. I never really look for rings on men, but I do avoid the creepy/smelly/overly intense people. What constitutes overly intense you ask? Well excessive gunting, sweating, or making your machine shake, rattle and roll because you are going too hard- up the resistance guys..helllllo. Its not rocket science. Also, I dont know why your protein powder sucks.. mine is delicious, and I guess I kinda thought all were? Try whey protein, Pure Protein and EGX are delicious. Just read the labels and watch sugar and fat. I recommened mixing 2 scoops of your not-so-good stuff in with a fat free pudding of your choice. Me and another guy in the office have been whipping up this protein pudding, and it is de-licious. I feel encouraged after reading your recent blogs. I've finally hit the 17 lbs mark as of Tuesday. That plateau sucked..but I have been switching it up and it is paying off. Now its about time for me to shop for some new pants, I am happy to say mine really dont fit anymore! Goodwill shoppers are going to be so excited to recieve a surplus of skirts, dresses, pants and shorts. Unfortunatly, some I really liked and had bought not that long ago. Oh well, small price to pay for looking/feeling better. Love you all and im excited when I log on here I have something to read and write funny comments about :) Keep up the good work. Work it out

Fill up my cup, mazel tov
Hi Family, Just got back from the gym. Woo hooo! I feel really great. My endorphins are happy or as I like to say, my dolphins are happy!
I love cardio that is constant & long. Today's regime: 30 running: 14 min @ 5.5, 6 min@ 6.5, 10 min. @ 5.5. That's about typical for me & the community center treadmill.
Today there was a surplus of men working out at the gym. I like to make a habit of noticing which cute young men are not wearing wedding rings. ;) One in particular is tall & handsome & a "regular". I envision him as a computer-tech by day. There are also some creepy guys. I make a habit of praying they don't choose the exercise equipment near me. (What constitutes creepy? Dad may ask. Long hair on balding men! Length of hair does not compensate! Long hair on guys in general is a no-no if you ask me.)
Speaking of hair or lack thereof ;) I have a new haircut & it is just long enough for a little pony stub & stays in place w/ a stretchy hair band. Dad, I'll send you a pic.
May your endorphins be happy! Move it.

Doing a little cycling
Well I'm happy to be back on the Fitness Blog. I did the recumbent cycle for 30 minutes this evening. It's not all that much so my blog won't be very long. But I'm already planning for tomorrow's stretching and lifting. (I knew if I didn't get back on the blog Chelsea would bed mad at me).

Made it through the gauntlet...
Gauntlet? Really? That's a bit of a hyperbole to describe my day or week, but anyway, I did exercise today at the community center. I ran at about 5.5 (sometimes less, sometimes more) for 40 min. I also fangoriously devoured mango-peach salsa with tortilla chips today after work despite efforts to restrain myself....
Hey doctors-- here's a question: what's the research on cravings? When we crave, say, tortilla chips is that our bodies' way of saying, "Salt..! I need salt!"
Maybe I needed salt?

Back, jack, do it again...
Hello! Guess what?! I'm bringing sexy back! Just kidding but I thought it'd be funny to say.
Chelsea! I am so glad you came to visit & I'm ready to be inspired by you & our family again. :) So...yesterday I hit the gym where I ran for 30 min & did some arm stuff & of course, the beloved exercise ball.
I started using the Loseit.com site again & so am going to pay attention to my calories. I even bought some protein powder. (Unfortunately, it is over the top disgusting to my tastebuds....I'm still tasting awful tastes 1 1/2 hr after drinking. "Designer Whey: Vanilla Almond" Uck!
Family, C's right. Let's have a spring renaissance!

plateau central
So i guess its true what they say.. during weightloss you hit a plateau! Well I hit mine when I noticed the scale not budging anymore! Ugh! I did some reasearch how to bust through this natural landfeature, and I have answers! I am now switching up my workouts with intensity/duration/resistence. I have gotten into a groove with always an hour of running or elliptical; so now I'll switch it up and a few days a week i'll go really hard for 30 minutes, with some intense weight lifting. This has already started to bump me outta my plateau. Gosh I love the internet...its so smart! It also suggested being 'bad' a few days a week. I tend to always eat the same (healthy) things, so when I splurge I feel like its ok. And apparently, my google search agrees! Spluring once in a while or zig zagging as they call it a few days a week will confuse your body and push you outta your rut.
Can we bring this blog back PUHH LEEZE? Spring is almost here and I need some encouragement and want to encourage you guys. We started this for a reason, and unfortuantly have not kept it going. But maybe nicer weather, like Moooochie said, will get us all in the spirit to; move it, move it. so .. updates please :)

Spring has Sprung!
Does anybody read this anymore? Should the blog go dark?
I am enjoying day light savings time in Pueblo. Tonight I went for my first outdoor run in the huge dirt lot behind La Quinta. It was much nicer than the nightly treadmill. I did hear a few rustlings in the brush that made me nervous for snakes. I am happy to report no snakes were observed during my 30 minute jog. I saw a few other runners and mountain bikers too.
We've enjoyed some fabulous, sunny 75 degree weather this week. Yay for spring!!
Doesn't it make you want to exercise?

Blog..? what blog??
Why hellllllllllo family!
I cant believe I forgot about this thing! Well I indeed have NOT fallen off any waggon except apparently the blogging waggon. Good news, I am back in writing action.
I've been doing really well and should* be down 17-18 lbs by next Sunday :) YAY!
My ultimate goal was 24lbs. So we're steadily making progress. But I must say, I do think the key to staying on track and achieving whatever fitness goals you have is letting yourself just enjoy food or a day off once in a while. For instance, I thought for sure I'd be a little detrailed after our colorada' vaca, but instead I came back and was down more than I thought and guilt free! Same as last night, I enjoyed some of the most delcious indian food and ice cream I have ever had, but felt again- guilt free because I eat well and exercise all the other days of the week. The point of this paragraph you ask?- reward yourself for working hard :)
Glad to see my seesters are enjoying running a'muk. March will surly add some outdoor running to my life. As well as sand volleyball and a kickball team! yay for young adult sports leagues.
Keep working hard, and Dad start blogging again!!!!!!!!!!!
love you all mucho mucho

Marching On
Hi Family,
On Saturday, February 27 it was so nice at 7 pm that I ran outside on the bikepath! I ran near OU where it was well lit & with shorts, a jacket, ear band & handkerchief was just fine. No real exercise to speak of since then, but these past couple nights I've been meaning to go to the gym. I keep crashing after dinner only to see my "nap" extend to like 2 or 4 am. Gosh... Okay, so this is kind of loserish way to not exercise, but all I can say is, I'm just hanging in there & haven't given up. I have the will to march on in March, ya know? This girl will have a bikini body in time for a possible summer vacation.
On the job front, I was called yesterday by the job placement agency about a temporary 2-3 wk. secretarial position at Children's Services. I began hours after the call & will be spending my M-F normal working hours there. I am learning so much as I am (thankfully??) unfamiliar with the services Children's Services offer. So far I would say that switchboard operators working with 70 lines are amazing...and a little kindness from co-workers goes a long way (but also vice versa.)
Hopefully, I will be blogging tomorrow night after running at the community center. :-D
Que pasa? What's up family? Tell me about your adventures in exercising!

Happy V Day!
Hello Fam!
Happy Valentine's Day. The posts seem to be dropping off, but hopefully you are all still working on your fitness. I'm routing for you!
Matt & I went snow shoeing again this weekend. His friend Joe came with us and injured his knee...so it was a short hike, but still a beautiful, sunny mountain day.
Here's our trek from last weekend:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/67072533
I pumped some iron at the gym today after a 37 minute run around town. It was 60+ degrees and lovely. Much nicer than last week's -10 temps.
Miss you all!

GREAT news
So this will be a short post.. but I got weighed and measured today after my workout. I was sweating bullets (and not from the workout!)
The polls are in and the results have been tallied (drum roll)
I've lost over 7 inches all over my body! 2 on my waste alone! The rest was on my arms, butt and legs. Also, I've lost 8 lbs and the 7th had been one month. This is the best reward I could ask for. I've been working so hard, so its nice to see tangible results.
Thought i'd share with my thistlethwaite family support group :) I celebrated with American Idol and a small glass of red wine and a hersheys kiss. Oh the small pleasures in life...

Winter Fun
Last weekend we got a bunch of snow in Denver. It was fluffy, beautiful snow. Too bad Denver has no sledding hills. Matt & I decided to enjoy the great outdoors by running around City Park:
The snow made a nice crunching noise. We like our neighborhoods because of the nice parks nearby for running. I still miss Green Lake in Seattle though.
Then on Super Bowl Sunday, which is 4 yrs exactly after Matt and I met, we drove out to Rocky Mountain National Park for a snowshoeing excursion. I gave Matt a GPS watch and he always tracks our runs/hikes, so I will post that link soon. We snowshoe'd about 5 miles on Cub Trail. We also saw about 100 elk having lunch. It was a beautiful day in the Rockies.
Tonight I have been running on the La Quinta treadmill to Glee. Looking forward to running outside again when it's not negative 5 degrees! Burrrrr!
Fitness thought of the day: some exercise is better than none. Even 5-10 minutes of cardio is better than sitting on a chair at La Quinta...or anywhere else.

My clothes are fitting better and people are asking me for my 'secret'. Little do they know I dont have one haha.

A Dance Party Night
Hi Fam! I was just reading posts & thinking, hmm.. no new post?? Oh wait, I'M SUPPOSED TO POST. Right!! So I didn't make it to the gym tonight so I have alternative plans: dance party!
Just hung some sheets over my windows (in case anyone is outside & trying to blackmail me...really? no) so now i can bust some moves in the privacy of my living rm. Funny thing about me is that I like exercising at night... Mornings are ok, afternoons are awful but evenings? Whew! Yes, please!
Dance party time!
PS I last ran on Monday at the Community Center. A good run! "Hills" at 4.5 and 3 minutes of 6.8 mph.

ColumbICE
Well as promised.. it was sooo icey this morning. It took me a while just to chisel out my car (thank goodness I have a wonderful car scraper in a fleecey glove, courtesy of McMooch) But I got to work just fine. Although I wish like schoools, work can have a snow/ice day! Oh to be young again...
Everythings great on the fitness side. Its becoming second nature to me to make healthy decisions. I had my last workout with my current trainer last night, and boy she had no mercy on me. We did lower body and I felt like my legs were going to give out. She showed me on a couple leg mahcines how if you just turn your feet out or in.. it works a whole different group of muscles. So we would do 3 sets of 10 on the machine with different leg positions, squat jumps then wall sits. We did this whole combination 3 times... oww chee wa wa. But after, as usual, I felt accomplished and great. A half hour more of ellipitcal, a protein shake and a shower later, I was home happily watching the Bachelor in my great robe (thanks dad again!)
love you all.. keep up the good work. I love our little motivation blog
Dad I got your email, and I will be emailing you shortly :)

Rocky Mountain Jaunt
Hello! Glad you are all getting back in the blogging saddle. Keep up the good fitness work...and blogging action.
Tonight Matt & I ran for an hour around our neighborhood. I also got some new running shoes because my last pair disappeared in the move from Seattle. I hope to solve the mystery of the missing Brooks one day...
I am thinking of signing up for a half marathon in April. It seems that I still run a lot slower mile here than an sea level, even after living in Colorado x 4 months. Maybe I should find a sea level race. Matt is running a Denver marathon in May so the April 1/2 will be a good test for him. That last Columbus 1/2 marathon we did, sisters, hurt! It would be nice to have a goal for my training.
We are going to Aspen tomorrow to watch the X games. Cousin Leslie is in town for those so we'll meet up tomorrow and then stay in the cabin she rented. We are planning to ski Sunday. I'm off Monday to hang out with Leslie. Then back to prison on Tuesday. :)
Have a great weekend, fitness gurus!

DOUBLED-UP ON FRIDAY
Willie Boy is back. I called this doubled-up because I doubled my exercises (resistance training) from 5 to 10 this morning. Would you believe I started my program at 10 minutes to 7 and was finished by 10 minutes after 8? It consisted of 6 minutes of warm-up, 10 stretching exercises, and 10 (not the usual 5) exercises. I figured I had been lax this week and I wasn't going to overtax any muscle groups. Now I could do all 10 every other day--or get some new ones. As I'm looking out my window from the computer I can see a fresh two inches of snow on the trees, bushes and yard. The roads are clear however. I haven't heard from David lately but I heard Washington got pounded with snow yesterday as did New York (19 inches). Well I still have 1 and one-half hours before I have to go to work. Over the last two days I picked up 7 new disability reports to write. Hope you all have a great weekend and I'll get those promised emails out to you.

Hard Work Pays Off!
Dad! So happy to see you didnt disappear from the world.. like Kayte, I was starting to worry. First you call all of us out for not writing then you go MIA! Well, welcome back! I hope you workout real hard to the OSU/Purdont game... we crusssshed them. It happened so fast! Man, its good to be a buckeye.
Anyways, a little update. I did a weigh in with my trainer last night and I have lost 6 lbs!!!!!!! and My bmi went from 23.8% to 21%! She was so proud of me (as was I of myself!) Usually when I start these heathly kicks, they dont last too long, or I fall off the wagon as we are calling it. But I really feel different about this time. I am recording everything that I eat in loseit.com and its really helping me make smarter decisions and portion better. If I want to eat 5 or 6 times a day.. I just portion out my calories. And Loseit.com is great because it allows you to set goals and it gives you a time frame that you will see results by if you stay within your caloric budget. That and its really a great designed website, I want to write the creator and rave to them.
Another update, my trainer got promoted, so I am with a new guy now. She put me with what she calls the best and I will start with him in 2 weeks. Yay! I hear he likes boxing....(thank goodness my boxing class at OSU will come in handy.. more than I can say about statistics)
Almost the weekend! Hope everyone is happy 'n doing great :)

WILLIE BOY'S BLOG
I got home late this afternoon after traveling to Kettering, then getting a haircut. Low and behold three different exercise blogs to read and one prison blog. I think I've heard it said by more than one daughter that they hoped I haven't fallen off of exercising. Well, a little bit. I've been doing my aerobics bike but not combining with the exercises quite as often. But your blogs have been inspirational and I'm going to get back on track. I'll be forwarding some emails to each of you in the next 12 hours. I didn't watch the State of the Union while exercising, but I do plan to watch and exercise to my recording of the Buckeyes smashing victory over Purdue, perhaps tonight. Love you all.

Jog n Blog
Hello!
Just finished a little treadmilling to the State of the Union, although wasn't Idol supposed to be on tonight? I was looking forward to it all day...
Didn't do much exercise last weekend in Seattle...unless singing karaoke counts :) Had a great time visiting my residency pals and catching up. It was even sunny one day! Unheard of for January!
Your turkey burgers sound good, Chel! I need to cook more in Denver. Still working on finding healthy options to eat in a hotel room. At work I just want to snack snack snack!
Cousin Leslie is coming in town this weekend to go to the Aspen X-games. Matt and I are going to join her and then ski Sunday in Vail or Beavercreek. I've gotten to ski 5 days so far...need to push for 10 to get my moneys worth on the ski pass!
I'm enjoying the daylight sticking around longer at night. Aren't you?

Hello my oh so healthy family!
It was strange taking the weekend off of going to the gym, but then I figured I skiied all day Saturday (which HAS to be some time of workout, even though I felt like I sat on a ski lift most of the day), and Sunday I was just too busy with work, having dinner with Kayte, and Church at night. I think I feel a little better about the days that I can't go because I am eating very healthy and most importantly in porportion! I dont really have the urge to take seconds anymore, or graze throughout the day. Maybe my stomach is shrinking to the size it should be (because it was definitly stretched out during christmas!) I think because I am eating right, I don't feel bad when I have a cookie or a couple hersheys kisses every now and then :) Dark chocolate is my weakness..
One of my favorite things to eat is to get ground lean turkey and mixed it with basil, oregano, red and black pepper and cumin (my new favorite spice) and then make 6 or so small gourmet turkey burgers. These little suckers on those new deli slim buns, and broccoli are a great light dinner after a workout . Plus I kinda feel like a mini chef mixing all my spices and grilling burgs. Cooking Channel here I come..watch out Rachel Ray
Anyways.. I've lost 4 lbs as of 4 days ago! yay!! I can already tell a difference in my body and its a rewarding feeling because I am really pushing myself when I workout. Its hard because, well.. hard things are HARD! But then I just think about how great I'll feel after I shower and slip into my great robe I use everyday (Thanks Dad!!!) If you're going to do anything, do it well.
Keep doing great things Denver, Athens and Loveland. Haven't heard from you in awhile Pops, how the progress coming???
Love,
Columbus

Run, run as fast as you can! You CAN catch me, I'm NOT the gingerbread man!
I ran tonight kinda fast! In the past I've been hesitant to run fast on treadmills because I'm afraid I'll fall (trip!) and I hate sounding like a thundering elephant as my feet hit the tread. But knowing Jules is cranking up her speed over 7 mph to Glee makes me think I can handle it too.
I got up to 6.8 for 5 minutes or so before going back down to a more comfortable 5.3 or something. Ran to Pandora's C & C Music Factory station. Somehow Lady Gaga as invaded that station with "Poker Face." Ran for 30 minutes. I'm kinda "slow" but steady....yes, like a turtle when it comes to running.
I've eaten like 6 Luna bars this past week and am looking for Luna bar coupons! Let me know if you find any! :)
Tonight also did tricks with the giant plastic ball. I love that thing.

Hello?
Um, Hello? Is anyone out there? January isn't even over yet, so I hope you haven't slacked on your fitness goals.

Back on track
This evening I drove on over to the community center to run. Yes, run! My body had experienced a horrible lack of that lately. That and too much food!
Guess what sisters! You inspired me to try intervals! I'm a totally slow runner--enjoying the constant 4.3 speed tonight--but add some inclines & a little screen with a preview of "what's coming" and it gets a little exciting. I choose the "hill" mode...maybe next time I'll try "random." Didn't have any music or American Idol to run to...just eye candy (i.e. sweaty people and tv screens w/ closed captioning...actually the food network was on! weird!) I need to find my headphones! Oh where, oh where can they be??!
So, yes, ran for 1/2 hr and did some abs with the help of a very large plastic ball.
I ate mostly well today. I HAVE DISCOVERED LUNA BARS!!! YUM! Instant yum. They're kinda sweet so I imagine they're not for eating "just cause." But my body turns into a digesting machine when I run...stay posted for more info...and so a Luna bar pre or post workout is a good fit for me. Haven't tried any protein drinks yet but if I find the right online coupon, I might splurge and "replace a meal" as C suggests.
Adios muchachos!

No business like snow business
Ahoy from snowy Pueblo! We got a late afternoon blast that coated the prison walkway, making for a slippery walk out.
I was able to hit the treadmill two of my 3 nights here in Pueblo - par for the course. Now that idol is back on, time flies on the treadmill! Love it!
I've also been trying to eat healthier despite having no kitchen (just a microwave and mini-fridge). The spinach, feta cheese, and sundried tomatoes with a spritz of low cal dressing. I still have a weak spot for hummus and pita chips.
BTW, where are you bloggers? I'm getting ragged on for not publishing enough prison blogs, but I think you all are on blogging vacation! I'll be in Seattle this weekend visiting my old peeps. Catch u next week!

Day Off
Hello Thistle Bloggers! Sounds like you are all doing lots of good work. I am taking today off from the La Quinta gym. I am hitting the sack early tonight...hopefully. I am bad about getting enough rest in Pueblo. Gotta sleep enough for good health, right?
Over the weekend, Matt and I went on a nice 45 minute run around some of the Denver Parks on Friday night before we went to a Guster concert (they're a band I liked in college who are still making good music and touring). Then Saturday I made use of my gym membership and did the elliptical while watching football. After that, I pumped some iron for my arms, chest, and back. Sunday was another ski day----nice snow in the Montezuma Bowl at Arapahoe Basin.
Matt starts his Colfax marathon training today. I may lose my running buddy to some long jaunts, or he'll have to drop me off after 3-5 miles...
I'm planning for some treadmill nights at La Quinta on Tuesday and Wednesday. Exercising 2/3 nights down in Pueblo seems to be all I can muster. Oh well.
Goodnight!

Still on track
Hello all! Sorry I have't posted recently, been pretty busy this weekend. But I have been working out everyday! (yay) Well except Sunday, because that day was pretty packed and I slept most of the day. Anyways, workouts are going great. I am really focusing on keeping things fresh and interesting - meaning switching up what I do. I always do cardio for an hour whether it be elliptical, running, biking or a mix of the 3. After that I spend usually a half hour doing weight training/stretching/abs. I had my first personal training appointment last Thursday, and was HARD! We did circuit training, meaning I'd do like 8 different things for a minute or so then switch to the next and repeat the whole series. I really enjoy circuit training because you target all kinds of different muscles while basically remaining out of breath the whole time. It was a tough workout but just taught me other type of exercises I could be doing when I am on my own.
Otherwise, It was a pretty good weekend. I went to the OSU vs. Penn State mens basketball game which was a real nail biter, it came down to seconds. But don't worry we are still number 1 in the nation.. hollller.
Glad you all are staying on track! Kayte dont worry, sometimes we all just need a little pizza and cheesecake. :) Tomorrow is a new day.
Good luck this week people, stay motivated!!! I am weighing myself in on the 21st to see what i've lost in 2 weeks!!! eeeeek

Oh dear!
Dad, you are so right! Where the heck are we??!
This past weekend starting Friday threw me way off b/c I wasn't at home... now cheesecake, a whole pizza and a lot of extra calories, and no workouts, ugghh... tomorrow perhaps I'll celebrate King's legacy with a challenging work-out/start-fresh day.
Hopefully, tomorrow night I'll have good news to share. :-o!

WHAT'S UP? NO NEW BLOGS?
I can't believe I posted the last fitness blog 4 days ago. Where are all you people? Probably very busy working in prisons, job interviewing, or mixing in with marketing people. I had a busy Friday and Saturday seeing patients which was good for a change. I just finished a 30 minute custom designed aerobics bike ride. Each time I consume more calories than the previous time--this time 203. I rolled the bike out in front of the TV and pedalled to the Seattle Seahawks and Chicago Bears and watched Chicago build up a 14 point lead under frigid, snowy conditions. I heard Seattle spent $4,000 on cold weather gear just for this game for their players. I followed my bike workout with stretching and strength training. The last time I was in Costco I acquired two books--one on stretching (Stretching Anatomy-by Nelson and Kokkonen) and weight training (The men's Health Big Book of Exercises). Keep your blogs comin'. I miss 'em. Thistlewf

TUESDAY A SNOW DAY
Tuesday was a snow day. I was actually sitting on my exercise bike at 7:00 AM when my office manager Mike called to say the weather was going to be so bad that the office was closed. So I stayed home and watched it snow all day. That does not mean I did not do my exercise, but I did postpone it until later in the day. When I did, I rode the bike for a full 30 minutes (and burned 176 calories) and did about 1 1/2 hours of assorted exercises and stretching. I need to spend some time today figuring out how to program my bike to custom design a program. After I get 4 new tires for my car installed at noon today, I think I'm going to Walmart and look at some new pieces of exercise gear (thera-bands, leg weights) and buy a few groceries.

Riding the Yoga Wave
Somewhere there are people getting tons of exercise and making money by shoveling snow. I am not one of them. Today it snowed like crazy in Ohio! Cats & dogs, I'd say! At present, I can hear the wind whistling through gaps in the windows. Thankfully, my home is cozy.
No way was I going out if I didn't have to today. So, no gym BUT my exercise ball is now inflated (a feat in itself!) and I love love love it! It's like playing while you're using it & between laughing, losing my balance & crashing to the floor, I did some ab crunching. :) My abs are currently pathetic. Not for long thanks for this new toy. Thank you Chelly!!
Next came yoga with a surfing chick named Shiva Rea & the dvd "Surf Yoga Soul." My goodness, that woman is chiseled in muscle and somehow managed 12 rounds of 12 push-ups and other yoga tricks. I kept up, but I'm not able to even do like 10 decent push-ups in a row. But...times they are a changing!
I'm eating carrot sticks & broccoli tonight as a snack. Usually it would be a nice bowl of rice chex with almond milk.... maybe I should make the change permanent. :) Less sugar, more vitamins.
Goodnight people! Rest up! Tomorrow's another day of living (in) the present!

Interval Action
Based on Matt and Chelsea's recommendations, I took my treadmill work out up a notch and did some intervals. I alternated speeds 6, 7, and 8 for 2.5 mins each, over 30 mins. It was much hard than my usual 30 at speed 6.5-7.1. It also helped the time go by. I recommend mixing it up.
Tomorrow I will take advantage of the La Quinta nautilus machine and pump some iron. I love to exercise to Glee.
Go Oregon Ducks!!! Down with the SEC!
Off to eat veggies...Gotta get my 4.5 cups per day. I am into carrots and snap peas. Especially with hummus. Mmmmmm....
Here's a calculator to figure out how many servings of fruits/veggies you should be eating:

BLOG MID EXERCISE
I am doing something I won't do again--it is not even 7 AM and I have stopped mid-exercise session to send this blog about how nice my recumbent exercise bike is. I assembled it yesterday and tried it out this morning for the first time. I pedelled (sic) ?piddled for 25 minutes and my heart rate peaked at 90 (beta blocker effect) after starting at 70. I only consumed 120. What did Chelly say 3500 cal per lb? Yikes. I'm going back to my stretches and strength training momentarily because this session won't be over until 8:30 AM. The bike is completely quiet and even though I haven't learned all the programs I started out at level 4 with no hills. I want to get more creative and I believe next time I will have music--maybe get out Kayte created I Pod schuffle. I haven't even used that for 3 years. By the way it's been almost 3 years now that I've been back to Cincinnati. I enjoy everyone blogs--they are more frequent than Julie's prison blogs. Keep contributing one and all. If I knew how to change my name for this blog I would become Thistlewf.

And it begins...
Ok Blog followers... I have no idea why my last blog post didn't show up! Ugh, it was so witty and descriptive- BOO! Oh well i'll have to give you the cliffs notes version. So for those of you who don't know (Dad), with part of my new salary raise, I got a personal training membership through my gym in Columbus for 6 months. I'll meet with my super trainer once a week for a hard as nails workout. My trainer's name is Jenna and she is, pardon my language, a bad ass. She ran track for Ohio State and has been training athletes since she was in High School. The first session, she took my BMI (which was higher than it was before I came home for Christmas, naturally), and measurements of my arms, thighs and stomach. After 4 weeks, I get re-assessed/measured/judged.
I am really excited to start this 6 month journey, I just want to finally be in the physical shape that I've always wanted to be in. Jenna asked me what I wanted to change about my body, so we made some goals and are tailoring my workouts to yield those results... and HOPEFULLY I will start seeing results. We also planned a a nutrition plan which limits my caloric intake to 1500, (but i eat more like 1300 i think..) so I have a tiny cute yellow notepad that I am constantly scribbling my menu into. ****The thing I realized is that, although I eat really healthy for the most part, I eat too much of it. Recording what I eat and the calories really lets me see what I am putting into my body. Its kinda like a game... how much delicious food can I eat for the least amount of calories. Cottage cheese, protein shakes, celery and grilled chicken have become my best friends.
Sorry this this blog is so long and boring...but now the boring stuff is all out there and I can start complaining and talking about daily work outs like the rest of you fools. I will be sure to pass on all the tips I get from Jenna so we all can benefit from my work bonus :)
The past 3 days of working out have been great.. i've really pushed myself for at least an hour everyday. I don't sweat very easily so I make sure I am sweating before I leave the gym.
Love you all...so happy Kayte started this blog. its like our own little motivation station. Healthy thistles and moochies 2k11. holler.
Things i've learned so far;
-if you can, replace one meal with a protein shake (but be weary of the ones with excess fat grams and sugar
- you have to expend more calories than you intake
-1 lb of fat = 3500 calories.
-2 lbs of fat a week is a good number, more than that and you are kidding yourself..
- instead of having 3 meals a day.. you should eat 5-6 times a day.. 'mini meals'.. but definitly have to watch calories with this..
-PUSH YOURSELF! You should be tired after working out!
-interval training/resistance makes your heart work harder = burning more fat
ok..thanks for reading my short novella. The next ones will be shorter, funnier and better :)
Peace Love and Turtledoves,
Chelly

Work it out
Hello! This week in the Centennial state, I have worked out 3 times and skied once. I didn't make it to the gym Tuesday due to the OSU game. Matt & I met up in Colorado Springs at BW3 instead. He brought me an OSU jersey to wear, and he wore his Jim Tressel vest. Apparently, the Colorado Springs buckeye fans used to congregate there en masse, but there were still a few scarlet and gray clad fans cheering with us. It was a real nailbiter, but I am very happy we took the SEC down!
Wednesday I was just lazy. However, with Kayte's encouragement, I stopped by the gym on the way back from Pueblo yesterday and did the elliptical. Thanks, Kayte!
Today, Matt & skied at Breckenridge. We just got back from a nice, but chilly, night run. I also have some vegetarian chili cooking in the crock pot. Hopefully it will warm us up! Maybe we can trade healthy recipes on here too???
Keep up the good work, Thistles!

LOOK AT DECEMBER 28 BLOG
I found it--I posted today's blog as a comment on the blog from December 28.
Also I realized who Chelly was. I thought perhaps it was Kayte's roommate but then I realized it was Chelsea. Never heard you called chelly before only Chels. Dad

NEW BLOG BURRIED
I just wrote a beautiful blog summing up this week. I was a little puzzled that I wasn't asked to give it a title. Anyway when I posted it it turned out I was just posting a comment on a previous blog. I have to go back and try to remember the date that I posted that comment (blog). Well I posted it today but I mean what the date of that bog was. Oh you know what I mean. I don't even know if it was 2010 or 2011. I am totally bummed out. :( Later today I may look it up and tell you where to look for it. Blogging is more complicated than emailing. DADDY THISTLETHWAITE

Valuable liquid life.
Hi! A quick post to let you know I haven't fallen off the fitness wagon! ;) Those fitness wagons are hard to catch so good thing. This week I ran on the 1st and 3rd, took the 4th off, and then yesterday threw me off a little because I randomly decided to give blood (No I did not sell it! The plasma place has left town...I think.) I'd never thought about blood as valuable, like, my blood having value to someone else; like for example I'd never thought about preemie babies needing it..one of the groups mentioned on the Red Cross booklet they have you read pre-donation. Yesterday my mind realized that "YES, what is circulating in me is VERY valuable! Blood, how I've taken you for granted all these years!"
Good news to self: no more failing the iron test! I always do! But my Blood Type Diet says "Say YES to red meat!" Yes, please! Love beef from local, well-tended cows.
So..mooooving on. I scarfed down the sloppy joe the blood people offered me (probably not from a happy cow) :( and my body felt a little less full. It was! (I wonder how much that blood weighed! Docs, do you know the answer?) Drank fluids, ate spinach, drank fluids, ate calzone, fluids... But afternoon exercise was replaced with a recovery nap. Then at 10 pm it was time to do Yoga! At 11 pm I had a dance party by myself and C & C Music Factory, Tiffany, Debbie Gibson... then shower and bed. A good day.
Today was the first Zumba class at the Athens Community Center for the New Year, but the class was full! Totally disappointed I was. I have a punch card to the ACC and so I did go running for 35 minutes. Not too fast, just steady. Like a turtle. I am a turtle.

Exercise update
For those of you who follow this blog, fear not that my lack of posting anything yesterday meant that I neglected to exercise. Au contraire I faithfully exercised Tuesday morning as I did on Monday. I might add that I felt good all day again. But due to the fact that I worked until 7, and that both the Ohio State football and basketball buckeyes were playing last night, I had NO TIME to post a blog. If you don't already know, OSU was successful in both athletic contests. Now as for today--I saw 5 patients this morning and I have not yet had a chance to put the muscles through their workout. But TRUST ME, I shall not rest tonight until that has been accomplished. :) Tomorrow will also be an afternoon exercise session due to more disability patients in the morning.

Mile High Workout
Hello Family Fitness Achievers!
I am carrying the fitness torch in Denver and Pueblo. I joined a gym a month ago and am trying to get my moneys worth. Yesterday, Matt showed me some upper arm weights and I am feeling the burn today! My goals are to get toned and get in decent running shape so I can run another 1/2 marathon sometime. I probably won't ever run a whole marathon, like the Flying Piglet superstar!
I also took advantage of the La Quinta treadmill tonight and enjoyed running to one of my fave HGTV shows, Property Virgins. I usually can't seem to exercise all 3 days that I'm in Pueblo, so hopefully I can break that trend this week. 3 for 3!!
Fave running song? Wolf like Me by TV on the Radio!

MONDAY, MONDAY
I can't remember when the last time I exercised starting at 7 am on a Monday morning. But sure enough I was working out until just after 8:30 doing aerobics, stretching, and different weight training from the day before. I felt better all day knowing I had my exercise done by the time I arrived at work. When I went to get in my frigid car I found a monster large box (very heavy) containing my semi-recumbent Schwinn 240 exercise bike was in the driveway. Not sure if it was delivered today or Sunday. It's a heavy sucker and I dragged it into the garage. So now after I get it assembled I will use that for my aerobics.

Move it nice & sweet & sassy!

Need workout sheets to record your "MOVES?" Click here!
Fitness Program Initiated !
Thanks to the Flying Piglet I am now able to post my first blog. The efforts today were centered around some stretching and upper body lifting. No aerobics today. I learned I need to get a better assortment of stretches and I need to record the number of reps and sets I do because when I went to write them down after I forgot. I did remember the weights used with the strength training exercises. Yes Flying Piglet I did work up a sweat (not with stretching though). Mostly I'm happy I just got started. I can't be accused of over doing it. Looking forward to tomorrow at 7 AM to 9 AM when I have reserved for exercise before going to the office an hour later than usual (10 AM). This will be my pattern on all Mondays, Tuesdays, and Fridays.

Go! (It's raining...Go running anyway!)
It's New Year's day & Ohio skies drained themselves with a constant sprinkling of the earth below. For the most part, it was a good day to be inside! Somewhere around 2:00 pm I saw the rain had let up and so I suited up in my running gear--yoga pants, tank, running shoes, & side pack (it is NOT a fanny pack! ;) ). I went outside & thought, "Hmm..a little cold..if I get wet, I'll be SO cold." Went back inside, put on lavender rain coat & away I jogged listening to Pandora's "21 Minute Workout" station.
Everything was going just fine until I reached the Habitat House to begin stretching. It was sprinkling more than just a bit at this point and so I went inside the house to do most of my stretching. (I always stretch bc my muscles complain if I don't!) At this point, I'm looking like a drowning rat, but no matter...I've got resolutions!!
I run, run, run...a little disappointed with my choice of music. (There's gotta be a better workout mix on Pandora!) I go about a mile in 10 minutes and in that time, the rain is coming down harder and the wind is picking up. No matter, I've got "Rhythm is a Dancer" playing in my ears, right? So I can do the full three miles? I think not.
Arriving at the Richland bridge, I see that I'm kinda stuck. I had been running with the wind but now, by turning around, I'll be running into it. Yikes! And as I mentioned, it's rainy! I secure the lavender rain jacket hood as best I can & decide to run along Shafer St. to hopefully avoid some of the colder winds.
It was a rough day for running outdoors, but it made the chicken, pita chips & hot shower I enjoyed after so much tastier. I love food and warmth. :)
Today's totals....2 miles of running...1/2 mile of walking....brrrrrr!!
